Jackson Rotary teaches solar cooking home and abroad

By Irene Perbal - Rotary Club of Jackson

The Rotary Club of Jackson recently sponsored a “Teaching the Teachers” project in Brazil. The aim of this Project is to provide economic ways to prepare food for low income populations, in regions where bottled gas and wood are expensive in relation to income, and where the sun is abundant year round.
Great incidents of sunshine represent an ideal environment for the Integrated Solar Cooking Method. Solar Cooking

The economy resulting from a cheap and healthy way of cooking will impact favorably on the domestic income of families and also provide them with a simple way to have safe drinking water.

Solar CookerThe main device is the Solar Cooker, or “CooKit”, (designed by Solar Cookers International) which consists of a foldable piece of cardboard lined with aluminum foil and works as a reflector for sun light, concentrating it on a black pot in a plastic oven bag.
Besides the Rotary’s International Project, they also provide  demonstrations and teachings in locally, blessed with abundant sun and many interested people. There are several demonstrations for scouts and other youth groups.   They will be demonstrating on Sunday, August 8 at the Farmer’s Market in Jackson and also at the Amador County Fair in Plymouth from July 29 to August 1.   There will be a sign-up sheet for ladies interested in a hands-on workshop of Solar Cooking.
